January to March 2017

Behind Closed Doors:
A Programme of  Special events Supported by the Friends of Lydiard Park
Swindon Council is closing Lydiard House during January, February and March 2017. The closure provides an opportunity to undertake intensive cleaning and care of the collections, prior to re-opening in time for the Easter holidays. During this closed period The Friends of Lydiard Park are partnering Lydiard House to offer a series of fascinating behind the scenes talks and tours. The full Programme should be available next month.
  • Lydiard Park runs events, appealing to all ages and interests, all through the year. Look out for family events in the school holidays, wildlife talks and storywalks. Click here to go to their website for full details of events and activities.

Exclusive events for Members of the Friends

  • Our summer trip for Friends to Kelmscott Manor took place on the 23 July. This beautiful 17th century manor house was the Cotswold retreat of Arts and Crafts founder, William Morris. The day included a guided tour round the Grade I listed house which contains an outstanding collection of the possessions and works of Morris, as well as of his family and associates (Benson, Burne-Jones, Rossetti and Webb). The group saw furniture, original textiles, pictures and paintings, carpets, ceramics and metalwork. The estate on the River Thames has a beautiful garden with easy access to the Thames Pathway, as well as a licensed Tearoom and Shop. Click here to see a selection of photographs taken by the Friends during our visit.
  • Photos and an information leaflet from the 2014 visit to Stourhead House and Gardens are still available here.

Funds raised through membership help finance work that might otherwise not be possible.
