A Free Public Exhibition commemorating the Battle of Ellendun

In September and October, the Friends of Lydiard Park, in partnership with Swindon and District War Games Club, and Big Battles Ltd, are marking the 1200th anniversary of the Battle of Ellendun. This took place in 825 CE, with Lydiard Tregoze and Wroughton identified as probable sites. It was at Ellendun that Egbert defeated Beornwulf of Mercia, which ultimately led to the creation of England.

Months of community work went into creating a life-like diorama featuring hundreds of figures, beautifully embroidered banners depicting the era, and informational panels that bring this extraordinary historical event to life.
